soyoung x memebox

In February, Memebox announced unfortunate news that they would be discontinuing their worldwide shipping service. At the same time, they also released a new promotion: "Write a Review & Get Your Money Back". A pretty sweet deal right? Besides the publicity boost, I think it was also a nice little way of saying thank you and goodbye to the worldwide fans they will be parting with. Due to shipping mishandling, I had to pick a new box to replace my initial one, thus my delayed review is finally released now. This box is a collaboration between korean beauty blogger 'Soyoung0201' from Youtube and Korean make-up subscription box 'Memebox'.

Before I start on the review, let me give a brief recap on my blogging history. This will be my very first beauty review on my new blog. It's been a while since I last ordered with Memebox... over a year ago! I remember they were pretty new back then and very under the radar among most beauty bloggers. Reviews for boxes were quite scarce so often times you took the risk of taking the plunge and buying a total mystery box or waiting for a review to reveal the items. My very first box was actually one of the first lucky boxes they released. I absolutely loved it! However, I'm unsure if they still do lucky boxes nowadays. I was planning on creating this blog and reviewing it last year but that fell through due to busy-ness and time intensive work needed to work on a blog.

Why haven't I ordered from Memebox since then? Well, I was in a beauty and self-care obsession at the time and my boyfriend got looped into it as well .. so that was an adventure on its own. The both of us went nuts buying and doing facial masks + new products together every week..... It was fun while it lasted, but Memebox came into my life when we finally got the "treat yo self" out of our system. Nonetheless, I did recently go on a big shopping spree when I visited Tokyo and Hong Kong over Christmas and New Years (fukubukuro season!) holidays. I plan to review those products in a later post so stay tuned!

But enough about me, let's get started shall we?

Here are all the products included with this box.

Stick Shadow #02 Lovely Sepia, 1.1g
Stick Shadow #03 Lovely Deep Bronze, 1.1g
Lip & Cheek #01 Lovely Peach, 4.5g
Lip & Cheek #02 Lovely Pink, 4.5g

The Stick EyeShadows retail at $10 individually or $24 for the set of three.
The Lip & Cheek Tints retail at $15 each or $24 for the set of two.

Also, I'm surprised to see that the packaging has changed a bit from their old packing style. They're both cute but quite different! The current memebox style is bright pink and square shaped compared to the soft light pink rectangular box it used to look like.

Let's start with the eyeshadow sticks...
eyeshadow trioI was very excited for these eyeshadow sticks as the trio came in my usual go to eyeshadow colour family, gold and bronze. Like many other bloggers, I also absolutely love the packaging for the whole set. Simple but very stylish. A mature and sophisticated touch for korean cosmetics that usually feature cute and fun packaging. I admit though, I was cautious about getting my hopes up for a blogger's first line with a cosmetics company. From the stock photos, I imagined it would be very basic packaging with gold caps and a gold logo printed on a cheap white plastic tube... Nothing too special. Much to my surprise, the quality exceeds expectations! I love that the body of the tubes are actually pearlescent white and not plain plastic white. The caps and logo are coated in rose gold but not cheap feeling.

The only problem I could possibly find was that it is pretty hard to tell the eyeshadow sticks apart to the point where it's kind of a pain. At the bottom of all the tube is a bright pink sticker that labels the colour on each stick in small print. The problem with this is that everything is identical unless you individually bring them closer to read the fine text. I would've appreciated it if they printed the color names on the barrel or at least the color number (1, 2, or 3) large and in the middle of the sticker at the bottom of the tubes. It would have saved a lot of time and been so much easier. A tip I may use myself, would be to slap a cute sticker or washi tape on the bottom for color coding.

All three colors were just lovely. I'm always afraid of stick type products especially with brow and liner pencils. However, I was curious to try out eyeshadow sticks. They never came in a colour I liked so I never ended up buying one until now. I can say now that after trying these, I'm definitely excited to try more. I love these eyeshadow sticks. The fact they are stick shadows make them portable so I definitely will be carrying these with me on the go. These eyeshadow sticks are very well pigmented and easy to apply. I only had to dab them lightly and so on near the crease to build up the color nicely and then gently blend. I do have to note that the rose gold stick isn't nearly as pigmented as its sisters nor very rose gold in colour... but gold sparkles do show up, so this could be used to highlight your inner corners for 'aegyo sal'. The lasting powder is very good. It won't budge at all, even during a shower! I had to scrub several times with the intention of really getting it off. Even the shimmer has lasting power in the shower and came off with the same amount of scrubbing as colour.

On to SoYoung's lip & cheek colour...
soyoung lip & cheek

These stains stand only a hair shorter and thicker than their beautiful sisters. They are very creamy and have a thick consistency. They go on smooth and are easy to apply, also keeping your lips feeling moisturized. They are quite opaque and have a matte finish, so blending for more even coverage is a must. The colour will rub off however, so take care to not touch your lips or smudge them.

Personally, I'm not very fond of wearing these lip products by themselves because they settle on your lip lines, emphasizing them which looks very unflattering. These look better when you wear them over a lipstick or primer. I am wearing peach and pink by themselves in the selcas below.

Another thing I have to point out is that these colours, at least when I wear them, aren't exactly the perfect match with the included eyeshadow. I like to use the eyeshadow in a gradient smokey wing and these colours just don't fit my preference for my usual look. The peach one may work for you if you enjoy a very light, casual make up look. If you only use lovely rose gold and lovely sepia lightly and perhaps only a very light touch of deep bronze, the peach will fit the look nicely. The deep bronze eyeshadow makes the look heavier rather easily so it is not really a good colour to use for light make up. These lip products however, are still nice creamy glosses to consider adding to your lip product collection if you like to adjust make up style for various seasonal looks. These colours can match spring and summer looks requiring peachy nude lips or adding a bright pop of color to your smile~

Overall, I like this box very much. I rate it a 4 out of 5.  I had to knock off a point for the lip duo as they didn't really do it for me. The big selling point of the box would be the lovely packaging design. Very nice. If that isn't enough, I really love the eyeshadows as they were the ideal stick shadow for me! I definitely recommend them to anyone looking to try out gold/bronze eyeshadow or an eyeshadow stick for the first time.
